In English, we have been reading ‘A Monster Calls,’ by Patrick Ness. We have been looking at making effective vocabulary choices when describing characters and settings and how best to use dialogue to advance the action in a story. The children have written and performed their own play scripts and have developed their understanding of how characters move and speak. The children have been acting out different scenes from the book and have written in role as the different characters.
In Maths, we have been developing our knowledge of place value. We have identified the value of digits of whole numbers up to 10,000,000 and decimals up to 3 decimal places. With this knowledge, we have learnt to order numbers and decimals and ascending order, compare numbers based on their values and improve our reasoning skills through problems solving and error-spotting activities. More recently, we have learnt to multiply decimals by 10, 100 and 1000 and used a range of written methods to multiply decimals by whole numbers.
In Science, our first Spring topic focuses on Living things and their habitats. We have identified the five Kingdoms of living things and, through a range of practical and outdoor activities, learnt to classify a range of living things based on their characteristics. To develop out knowledge of the Fungi kingdom we planned our undertook our own investigations to observe (over time) the effect of mould on a range of food products, We chose a range of environments to compare the effects of mould and included a variable to identify whether moisture had any further impact.
In History, we have been looking at timelines, and some of the many important periods in British history. We have been writing a diary, imagining ourselves to be time travelers, and considering the similarities and differences between periods, and how Britain has changed over time.
