At Lime Tree we follow the National phonics programme, ‘Letters and Sounds’ to support the teaching of phonics in our school. From the Foundation stage up to Key stage 1 phonics is an integral part of the curriculum that enables children to segment and blend sounds. As children become confident with their phonic knowledge they are able to use what they know for independent application of reading and writing.

In the Early Years, teachers use ‘Jolly Phonics’ scheme to support the teaching of initial sounds through engaging stories, songs and games. ‘Penpals’ is used alongside the application of phonics by all teachers to encourage correct letter formation and to ensure consistency and progression amongst year groups. A range of resources support the teaching of phonics to engage children including games on the interactive whiteboards, magnetic alphabet letters, threading letters, board games and much more.

The discrete daily phonics sessions are structured into four aspects Revisit, Teach, Practise and Apply. Children have plenty of opportunities during the day to develop their phonic knowledge through carefully planned sessions which include children applying their phonic knowledge to both reading and writing.
